Due to the Pituitary Gland being activated at an early age, “Precoceous Hormonal” development may occur in younger persons. However this is usually associated with medical problems such as Tumours and other developmental defects.
So Lina although not recorded herself, may have had such problems, she certainly passed on to her son who died of a bone marrow disorder.
It would seem that in many of the South American countries, early development is not that uncommon. This could be a natural safeguard for the species to maintain a population level. “Preservation of the spiecies?” To us they seem backward and we sit in moral judgement, but it is a way of life established over hundreds/thousands of years which permits intercourse with “Minors”.
My sister in laws ex husband who came from Chili, had a daughter to his sister at age 13. And was later caught in the cot with his daughter. So it is a way of socio upbringing, what is morally unaceptable to us is an accepted way of life for them.

highschoolstudent, you are incorrect in that last statement. Offspring of closely related individuals do not have messed up genetics. Generally, they are pretty much normal. Linebreeding/inbreeding like this will make genetic traits more likely to come to the surface over generations – bad things things like hemophilia in royal families or deafness in certain dog breeds, as well as good things, like speed in racehorses.

Also, if the father of the child had been the mother’s father (confusing sentence), the child would have been unhealthy. You can’t marry a sibling or close relative because your kids would then have messed up genetics. Not to sound snotty or like I think I’m the best thing since sliced bread, but I’m surprised it’s taken nearly 100 comments for this to come up. IT WASN’T THE FATHER!!! Current day genetics can prove this.

fyi, before judging, realize I am only in high school. Thank you.
Okay, I had to read this for a school assignment, and thought that it was just wrong. But after reading over 50 of your comments, I realized that maybe it wasn’t. There were some civilizations that would consider me an old maid because I am an unmarried teenager. What does that say about this tribe? It says that perhaps these are people that get married at young ages and the husband and wife, while being young, had a “honeymoon” of sorts. In this case, people may say, “but she wouldn’t consent to marriage at such a young age, and if she did, she certainly wouldn’t consent to intercourse.” Well, there is such a thing as an arranged marriage, even today. The people that are married through an arranged marriage usually don’t get any say in what goes on in their lives and could end up doing something they may not want or they may not mind doing, but not at their age or that particular time in their lives. Also, we are thinking with todays society, where there are people that do things that are illegal due to all of our laws, but I don’t see these people having a bill of rights or a constitution of even a couple of widespread laws, so even if she was raped, it was quite possible that that was normal and okay where she was from. Another point, there was a six year old in America after there were all the laws and the father of her baby was nine. They were simply fooling around and one thing led to another because they didn’t know any better. My little brother is 5 and he enjoys spending his time running around with his friends naked. He is simply experimenting with what he is able to do. So what? Also, people do make such a huge hype over the teenagers that are pregnant in our society, maybe more stories like this should be broadcast. People may think twice before just risking something like a pregnancy. It would help people see that the child needs help and care and it isn’t just a doll. While this could have been tragic for Lina, having to carry a child and go through surgery and recover, it is an excellent learning experience for the rest of the world and the teenagers you may not want to get pregnant today. And for those of you that still believe it was the father, then maybe it will help sick, distured, messed up fathers realize that what they do to their kids, could be the last thing they ever do.

Ok … It’s amazing that people are so impassioned by the possible rape of a child 80 yrs ago. Lina now lives in poverty and after all these yrs I think the loss of her son (who she grew up with) must be far more traumatic than anything else.
I’ve read so many post blaming Lina’s father for her pregnancy. Which might be so but it is far more likely that it was “playing” with an older child that caused it. A lot of the time, in small villages, children are left with a communal care giver (school wouldn’t have been an option at this time).
As for her period, the Shamans thought she had a tumor so her parents would probably have thought that was the cause.
Lina was lucky to have parents who looked after her and her child and that she was able to have a relatively normal life. I’ve know many pre-teens who have been molested and thrown out of their homes (by their mothers) for being “bad girls”.
She probably never said the name of the baby’s father because she did not know what it was she had done to be pregnant and thereby didn’t know who she had done it with. (Again I’ve met girls who have gone through this)

I had heard of this before, although I’ve never been able to read about it in detail.

Precocious puberty does happen, although it is rare. I started going through puberty when I was 18 months old, but thanks to modern medicine it was suppressed with hormone treatments and I was allowed a normal childhood and started puberty again at a more normal age.

To everybody talking about the “sicko” who impregnated her, while I’m not saying what he did was right, by any means, I do feel i have to point out that he was probably not a paedophile. She had breasts and a waist. Paedophiles are attracted to the asexuality of children, while she obviously looked very much like a woman, bodywise.

Now before you all start flaming me, I’ll clarify again, if the father was an adult (like her own father for example), I do not think that not being a paedophile means that what he did wasn’t wrong, because he would have known how old she was.

That being said, it is possible that she was being abused from a very young age, and that abuse triggered puberty, like happened with me.

Somebody very early on made a comment about the chances of a child this young both having precocious puberty and being molested. The truth of the matter is that in the western world, at least 70% of children experience some kind of abuse (whether that’s physical, sexual, emotional, or mental) by the time they’re 12. Most of the time the abuse is suffered at the hands of a trusted adult, a parent or grandparent or uncle or aunt or friends of the adults around them. The other two types of people who inflict the abuse are complete strangers and.. wait for it.. other children. And this leads me to my whole point.

What I don’t understand is why so many people on here consider it impossible that one of the local youths, possibly 11 or 12 years old and having discovered that the female form made him aroused, had noticed that Lina, a younger and therefore more easily controlled child, had the figure of a woman, and had convinced her to experiment with him. That makes far more sense to me, since her father knew about the periods and would have been far more careful than to get her pregnant if he had been abusing her. Any adult would have known the consequences. Another child, however, may not have known what could result. Why would she keep her mouth shut about that? To avoid getting him in trouble of course!

I just feel that there is far more to this than the conclusions that people are automatically jumping to. Lina herself is the only one who knows the truth, and even she possibly doesn’t remember.
