He passed away this past weekend. I remember years ago him saying that he served in Greenland and he was a company recorder and saying there was a nuclear power plant there. I had to look it up the day after his passing. As an adult I never asked him about it and wished that I had.

He did 6 hardship tours and was there when they shut down the reactor (1964) and when they shoved it all in the ice (1965). I am amazed at all he still remembers about it at the age of 75.

Indeed, we have an article about that as well.

Strange to have them on a base. They can be unpredictable and aggressive, I wouldn’t have thought them to be mascot material.

Anyway, thanks Alan for the interesting story. I had never heard of it before. I do know however that the CIA once build a nuclear powered spy outpost in the Himalayas. It was intended to spy on China but alas, a glacier erased the outpost and several pounds of plutonium while it was temporarily unmanned. The plutonium was never retrieved but traces of plutonium show up in the area. If the casing has broken than one day some poor hiker is going to stumble upon a melting glacier and take a snapshot of the last strange gizmo he/she is likely to ever come across.

As much as a I resent internet conspiracy theories and the poor excuse for logic they contain.. I can almost forgive people for believing in them after reading some of the actual historical events.

The US War Office film is the source of the “misrepresentations” that you point out.

I was there during the final construction, core loading and initial operation and
testing(first tour) and operation and maintenance(second tour). Mukluk
was more a “nice wolf” rather than a “nice dog”. His tour ended when the
camp commander (Capt Broumas) found him chewing on a side of beef
in the food storage trench. He left on the next swing back to Camp Tuto.
The tours were an interesting experience but not one I would want
to repeat.

“The Nuclear Reactor” is actually the front part of the vapor container.
There were two skids installed in it, the reactor skid and the steam
generator skid. The view shows the pipe and cable penetrations and the access hatch closed with 96 bolts. Also, Mukluk was not a “nice puppy’,
he was more like a “nice wolf”. Just two of the misrepresentations in the
article.

I enjoy reading the article, however, I need an audio at times as well, because there are moments I find my mind wandering when I need to listen. I believe many people claim it’s selective hearing.

When I thought I missed something in the audio I re-listened to parts I thought I might have missed. So the good part is practicing to listen carefully.

I am often educated by the Damn Interesting articles. It is my favorite site to visit. I am very grateful to the creator of the site to say the least. I am also grateful to the contributors of such interesting articles.
