It’s been a busy summer, and the large shortfall in donations last month has been demoralizing, so we’re taking a week off to rest and recuperate. The curated links section will be (mostly) silent, and behind the scenes we’ll be taking a brief break from our usual researching, writing, editing, illustrating, narrating, sound designing, coding, et cetera. We plan to return to normalcy on the 11th of September. (The word “normalcy” was not considered an acceptable alternative to “normality” until 14 May 1920, when then-presidential-candidate Warren G. Harding misused the mathematical term in a campaign speech, stating that America needed, “not nostrums, but normalcy.” He then integrated this error into his campaign slogan, “Return to Normalcy.” Also, the G in Warren G. Harding stood for “Gamaliel.”)
While we are away, on 06 September 2023, Damn Interesting will be turning 18 years old. To celebrate, here are the first emojis to ever appear in the body of a Damn Interesting post: 🎂🎉🎁
If you become bored while we are away, you might try a little mobile game we’ve been working on called Wordwhile. It can be played alone, or with a friend. If you enjoy games like Scrabble and Wordle, you may find this one ENJOYABLE (75 points).
And, as always, there are lots of ways to explore our back-catalog.

Speaking of Harding, my wife and I visited his preserved house in Marion, Ohio, on 08.30.23. It is an interesting house, but of much greater interest is the truly huge monument that a local group had erected. It is larger and more grandiose than many of the Founding Fathers’ monuments. Frankly, I find it to be ridiculous, considering that he served only 29.5 months. Also, the man’s morals and character make the monument even more absurd.
Interesting game. I doubt that I will ever come even remotely close to your score.
Hmm… Maybe I’ll be able to find a cheat site or find an AI that specializes in Wordwhile.
I miss new posts and, especially, new podcast episodes! I hope everything is okay.
Did you guys retire?
I realize you are not a 501(c)(3) charity and donations are not tax-deductible. Have you considered that road (or, to be perfectly frank, why have you not taken that path)?
Love the games. Loved the essays.
This silence isn’t that interesting, at least to me. And I’ll be damned if I give up on you. But I have to ask: what do we have to do to get you back to what you started before a “bit” of breaking became sporadic posting?
You need new blood? Ask.
You want more time off? Do tell.
I can’t fathom the work that goes into a site like this. But I can understand the depths that must be dredged to keep this afloat (pardon the mix of ups and downs, though they do track with the emotions of those who love this site).
As an educator, I have turned many a student onto what you offer(ed). I want to see you offering the same again.
Circling back and closing out, if a pedia that wikis its readers with constant begging for lucre can exist and function, surely an interesting damn can find a way to fund itself while recruiting others to help lessen the slack that has led to this long break (which no longer functions as “a bit”).
Wishing you the best and wanting more.
